This was mostly a lay-low day, but we took a brief road trip through the mountains west of Denver. Local guides suggested that Guanella Pass, an hour or so west of the city, would be an especially scenic route. It was.

Word to the wise … this is a very windy road. If lots of switchbacks are not your thing, this is not your road. I, however, quite enjoyed it!

Here’s a sample of the scenery that we enjoyed.

A forested mountain valley south of Georgetown, Colorado, with slopes covered in dense evergreens and aspens under an overcast gray sky. A paved road winds down through the trees, and a line of transmission towers runs up the right-hand ridge.

A calm green lake reflecting a forested mountainside under an overcast gray sky, with a rocky shoreline lined by evergreen trees and a metal transmission tower carrying power lines across the slope.
Green Lake, south of Georgetown, Colorado
A rugged alpine landscape under a heavy overcast sky, with rocky ridgelines and a peak partly wrapped in low clouds rising above rolling green tundra and scattered evergreen trees in the foreground.
Guanella Pass Summit, south of Georgetown, Colorado
A broad alpine meadow of low green willow shrubs and grasses in the foreground, with a forested mountainside rising to a rounded peak partly wrapped in low clouds under a heavily overcast gray sky.
