To ring in the New Year, I explored the coast from Tofino down to Ucluelet and back.

I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was staying nearby a Kerfuffle Zone. (Gulp!)

After coffee, I enjoyed the sunrise from the marina in Tofino.

A calm harbour marina in Tofino, British Columbia, with white powerboats and sailboats moored along wooden docks, their reflections mirrored in the still water. Forested mountains rise across the water under a bright blue morning sky streaked with scattered clouds.

After this, I drove down to Ucluelet and enjoyed a walk along the Wild Pacific Trail.

A packed dirt and gravel trail winds through a coastal forest of moss-covered, wind-shaped conifers, flanked by lush green shrubs, with glimpses of blue sky and ocean between the trees.

A wave crashes and sends up a plume of white spray against dark, jagged coastal rocks in the foreground, with the open Pacific Ocean stretching to the horizon under a pale, softly clouded morning sky.

Along the way back, I stopped for a quick hike on the Shorepine Bog trail.

A weathered wooden boardwalk winds through a bog forest of stunted, gnarled shore pines and low green shrubbery under an overcast sky.

By early afternoon, the weather had deterioriated into the stereotypical Pacific Northwest rain and grey, so I went back to Tofino, had a good coffee, and enjoyed a good nap.

Tomorrow I head home.
