A last-minute opportunity presented itself and so I am taking a few days to myself as a “me-cation” in the Columbia River Gorge.

I didn’t exactly go the direct route from home to Hood River. (You are shocked, I know.) And I was rewarded with some delightful desert cloudscapes along the way.

A gravel road stretches into the distance across flat sagebrush rangeland toward low, partly snow-dusted hills under a vast, dramatic sky of heavy gray storm clouds with visible rain falling in the distance. A wire fence runs along the right side of the road near the horizon.

A wide, flat grassland plain under a dramatic, mostly overcast sky with towering gray storm clouds and streaks of rain visibly falling toward the horizon. A dark line of pine trees marks the far edge of the field, with low hills faintly visible in the distance.

A high desert landscape northwest of Warm Springs, Oregon, with scattered rocks, dry grass, sagebrush, and juniper trees in the foreground, and a low canyon rim or plateau on the horizon under a heavy, dark gray overcast sky with streaks of rain in the distance.

A high desert landscape northwest of Warm Springs, Oregon, with rolling grassy hills dotted with juniper trees leading toward flat-topped mesas and canyon rims under a heavy overcast sky. Dark rain clouds hang low over the horizon, with streaks of falling rain visible in the distance and a weathered fence line running along the near hillside.

The night ended with some delightful jazz music at the Hood River Hotel.
