Today we left the big city and headed up to visit some relatives of mine near the Canadian border in upstate New York.

We decided to take the Empire Service train to Albany, which made the first part of the trip out of the city much easier and faster than driving. I got seats on the Hudson River side of the train, which made for some really fun views.

The George Washington Bridge spanning the Hudson River under an overcast gray sky, with a tall building visible on the far shore. In the foreground, lush green trees rise behind a black metal fence along the riverbank.
Manhattan, New York, New York
A long cable-stayed bridge spans a wide gray river under an overcast sky, with the underside of its concrete approach piers curving overhead on the right. Railroad tracks run along the gravel shoreline in the foreground, and low hills line the far shore.
Tarrytown, New York
A wide, muddy-brown river under a heavy, overcast gray sky, with forested green hills rising along the far shore. A long freight train with stacked shipping containers runs along the opposite bank, and a rocky shoreline with green shrubs sits in the foreground.
Fort Montgomery, New York
A forested, dome-shaped mountain with an exposed rocky cliff face rises across a wide gray river under an overcast, hazy sky. In the foreground are railroad tracks, gravel, driftwood, and scrubby bare branches along the near shore.
Cornwall-On-Hudson, New York
A small wooded island with the ruins of a castle-like brick structure sits in the broad Hudson River under an overcast, hazy gray sky, with mist-shrouded hills and distant shoreline buildings in the background. Green foliage frames the lower edge of the frame in the foreground.
Cornwall-On-Hudson, New York
View from water level beneath two parallel steel truss bridges that recede into the distance over a wide, muddy river under an overcast gray sky. Concrete piers rise from the brown water supporting the spans, with a low tree-lined shoreline and distant buildings visible between the bridge sections.
Beacon, New York
A small white lighthouse sits on a rocky outcrop in the middle of a wide, muddy-brown river, with a red navigational buoy nearby and tree-covered hills receding into hazy gray sky beyond.
Hyde Park, New York
Several white sailboats scattered across a wide expanse of gray water under an overcast sky, with a tree-covered shoreline dotted with houses and a low hill rising to the left in the distance.
Rhinecliff, New York
A calm, muddy-brown wetland or lake dotted with floating patches of green aquatic vegetation under a heavy, overcast gray sky, with a low tree line along the distant shore.
Stottville, New York
A wide, calm stretch of murky river water under an overcast gray sky, with patches of aquatic plants breaking the surface in the foreground and a tree-covered shoreline in the distance. A small island with green and bare trees and reedy vegetation sits in the middle of the water.
Stockport, New York
A wide, calm muddy-brown river under a heavy overcast sky, with a low wooded shoreline of green trees and tan reeds stretching across the far bank.

In Albany, we picked up a rental car for the remainder of the trip. It was very rainy this afternoon, so we didn’t stop for photos at all.
