Australia Day 6: Unzoo

30 June 2025 167 km / 104 mi (map)

Now that we’ve rearranged our trip, we’re enjoying one of our bonus days in Tasmania.

I started with an early-morning walk around the central business district.

Fishing boats moored in a calm harbour at dawn, with a bright yellow vessel marked UN3 in the foreground and a blue boat beside it, their masts and the pink-and-orange sky mirrored in the still water. Waterfront buildings and warehouses line the shore in the background under a colourful sunrise.

A polished metal outline sculpture of a man wearing a hat and coat, possibly carrying a bag, standing on a paved cobblestone area in front of a wall built from sandstone, brick, and dark stone. The word “Charlie” appears etched faintly on the sculpture’s lower body.

The highlight of the day was a visit to the Tasmanian Devil Unzoo, an hour’s drive east of Hobart.

In this zoo, you get to hang around with some very mellow kangaroos.

Two brown kangaroos stand close together on bare, leaf-littered ground, backlit by low afternoon sun that rims their fur. One leans its head down near the other, which has its head lowered toward the ground.

My daughter has long been fascinated by the irascible creatures known as Tasmanian devils, so it was fun for her to see them up close.

A green rosella parrot with yellow underparts, a blue cheek patch, a red marking above its beak, and a pale beak, perched on a weathered tree stump against a backdrop of soft green eucalyptus foliage.

Not sure what was for lunch, but it didn’t have much of a chance against the devil’s jaws.

A black Tasmanian devil with a white stripe across its chest stands on patchy grass and bare dirt, gripping and feeding on a piece of meat or carcass attached to a metal hook. Its mouth is open, baring sharp white teeth.

We took a coastal route back to Hobart and arrived just in time for dusk.

A calm bay viewed from a sandy, pebble-strewn beach with golden dune grass in the foreground, looking across still blue water toward low scrub-covered headlands and distant rolling hills under a wide blue sky streaked with wispy cirrus clouds.
Carlisle Beach, south of Dunalley, Tasmania, Australia
An elevated dusk view over Hobart’s waterfront harbour, with boats moored in a marina, lit streets and car traffic, low-rise buildings and a few taller towers, and distant hills under a deep blue evening sky. The shot appears taken through a window, with dark foreground rooftops framing the lower part of the frame.
