Southeastern US Day 3: Back on Track

20 March 2023 277 km / 172 mi (map)

Fortunately, I was able to get back on track and resume the trip as planned today.

My sweet ride and I got a 70-km / 45-mile ride to Florence in the morning where, thankfully, the right tire was in stock and could be installed. (BTW, if you’re wondering how I scored a BMW as a rental, look no further than Turo, which you could think of as AirBNB but for cars. I grew tired of the milquetoast selection of vehicles and terrible customer service of the big-name rental companies cough Hertz cough, I’m looking at you.)

Manning, South Carolina

This trip is not a vacation for me. I am continuing to work, but more remotely than usual. (Thank you, Adobe, for allowing that!) Given that the flat had caused an intrusion on a day I had planned to work, I high-tailed it to my intended office / AirBNB location in Wilmington once the car was again road-ready. No photos along the way, but I did go for a brief photo walk after hours in the downtown historic district where I am staying.

A wooden riverwalk boardwalk with vintage-style lampposts stretches along the Cape Fear River in Wilmington, North Carolina, under a bright blue sky with scattered clouds. A tour boat is docked at left, the battleship USS North Carolina is visible in the distance across the water, and brick buildings, power lines, and a parking area line the riverfront to the right.

A three-story red brick warehouse with white painted lettering reading “J.W. Brooks Wholesale Grocer” on its side, seen from a wooden riverfront boardwalk under a deep blue sky with scattered clouds. A vintage-style lamppost, wooden railings, a river, and a leafy tree frame the scene in late afternoon light.

A downtown Wilmington sidewalk lined with old brick storefronts, including Cape Fear Spice Merchants with black awnings and shop windows reading “Spices, Teas, Gifts,” and a Kilwins sign farther down. Late-afternoon sun filters through bare and budding trees, casting long shadows on the pavement, with parked cars and a river visible in the distance.
