Summer Break Days 7 and 8: San Francisco

27 June 2023 553 km / 343 mi (map)

Yesterday, we drove from Reno to Half Moon Bay, California, by way of the south side of Lake Tahoe. Today, we drove back into San Francisco for some shopping and a big-city experience.

A wide view across the calm blue waters of Lake Tahoe under a clear blue sky, with snow-dappled mountains ringing the far shore beneath a band of white clouds. A few small boats float near the distant shoreline, and dark rocks line the near edge in the lower left corner.

A sweeping view over a dense evergreen forest stretching to distant tree-covered hills and hazy mountains under a bright blue sky dotted with puffy white clouds. In the left foreground, a lone pine tree grows atop weathered granite boulders.

My daughter and I are traveling together for this leg of the trip. She had Googled Half Moon Bay and was all excited to take me to dinner at Dad’s Luncheonette as a belated Father’s Day gift. Sadly, they are only open a few days per week and our days in Half Moon Bay are not among those days.

After our shopping expedition in The City, we took some time for a walk along the coastline at Lands End:

A stand of tall Monterey cypress trees with weathered gray trunks and dark windswept canopies rising above a green coastal hillside under an overcast sky, with red Indian paintbrush and small purple and white wildflowers scattered across the grassy foreground at Lands End in San Francisco.

The Golden Gate Bridge partly shrouded in fog across a gray, overcast bay, with a rocky, cypress-covered headland and small rock outcrops rising from the choppy water in the foreground.
Golden Gate National Recreation Area, San Francisco, California
Two people walk away down a dirt path along the coast, framed by a windswept cypress tree on the left and a graffiti-covered concrete wall on the right, with the Golden Gate Bridge faintly visible through the fog in the distance.

A gray, overcast view over the ocean from a coastal bluff, with weathered offshore sea stacks streaked white with bird droppings and topped by roosting seabirds, while waves foam around rocks near shore and a windswept cypress tree and grassy vegetation frame the foreground.

A doodle of a cat’s face drawn in black marker on a weathered olive-green wall, with the word “meow” written across the middle flanked by pointed ears, whiskers, and a small mouth. Above it runs a diagonal band of dark, mold-stained concrete and beige surfaces.

We start making our way northward towards home tomorrow.
