South Carolina Day 2: Low Country Back Roads

22 October 2023 186 km / 115 mi (map)

Ever get curious to see where a road goes for no good reason whatsoever?

No?

Well, I do. And today I scratched one of those itches.

I saw a little town in the middle of nowhere named Bennett’s Point and decided to go check it out. The town itself is not really much to write home about (and thus there are no photos from there), but the Bear Island Game Management along the way was a treat.

Today was mostly about driving some back roads in the low country here in South Carolina.

A coastal salt marsh with clumps of tall grasses and reeds surrounding a winding channel of still water, bordered by a line of pine and hardwood trees under a bright blue sky streaked with wispy cirrus clouds.

A wide panoramic view of a tidal marsh with calm water dotted by grassy hummocks, framed by pine trees and golden marsh grasses in the foreground under a bright blue sky with wispy clouds.

A rural asphalt road stretches into the distance alongside a marshy tidal wetland dotted with clumps of tall grass, under a deep blue sky with wispy clouds and overhead power lines. A treeline runs across the horizon and pine branches hang into the frame at the upper right.

A tidal river winding through a coastal salt marsh under a bright blue sky with wispy clouds, with weathered wooden pilings of an old dock jutting up from the brown water in the foreground and a line of trees on the far bank.

A quiet two-lane rural road with a double yellow center line curves through a canopy of tall trees under a bright blue sky, with a large spreading live oak draped in Spanish moss reaching over the road on the right and sunlight flaring through the branches.
