California Day 1: Window Seat

17 October 2025 1351 km / 840 mi (map)

I had a window seat that gave me some nice sunset views on my flight to San Jose tonight.

We started with a view of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

An aerial view over a hazy waterway near Gig Harbor, Washington, with a twin-tower suspension bridge spanning the channel and connecting a densely built urban area on the left to forested, hilly land on the right. Late afternoon light casts a soft golden haze over the water, and a small airstrip with rows of hangars is visible on the right.

And then we turned for a view of Mount Rainier …

A snow-capped volcanic peak rises above a layer of clouds, photographed from above with a hazy, pale gradient sky overhead in late afternoon light. The mountain’s glaciated upper slopes catch a warm golden glow while the lower flanks fade into the haze.

… and later Mount Shasta.

An aerial view of a snow-dusted volcanic peak rising above a hazy, golden landscape, its slopes glowing pink and amber in the soft light of evening near Etna, California. A warm haze fills the sky and obscures the lower terrain below.

An aerial night view of San Francisco showing the brightly lit city grid in the lower portion, with the illuminated Bay Bridge stretching across the dark water of San Francisco Bay toward Yerba Buena and Treasure Island. Ships and waterfront piers glow along the bay’s edge.

An aerial view at dusk over the San Francisco Bay Area, with a sprawling carpet of glittering city lights stretching across the plain toward distant hills, the dark waters of the bay catching faint reflections, and a deep blue twilight sky overhead.
