My time in the city is done (no photos – sorry). Today I treated myself to a ride on the Adirondack Train, which mirrors the route of the Empire Service as far as Albany, but then diverges north to Montreal. Since I was returning to visit family upstate, I hopped off the train at Plattsburgh.
Today’s route took in a few familiar views of the Hudson River.
After Albany, we were no longer following the river but cutting through farmland and forest for a while.
I must confess to multitasking a bit … editing photos while also creating more. Here is my mobile photo lab in action:
Somewhere along the way here, the geography starts to shift from river to the very large Lake Champlain. I’m not exactly clear where the boundary lies, but we followed the water for the last 174 km / 108 miles of the trip and it led to many great photo opportunities.
The track used for this leg of the trip is not often travelled. It being fall, the train was kicking up lots of leaves as we went. I was debating how to capture that (maybe a movie?) when I got photobombed by this one leaf in the upper corner.
I mentioned earlier that we followed the water for 174 km / 108 miles. That journey took 3 hours and 15 minutes, so … if you’re in a hurry to get from Albany to Plattsburgh, this form of travel is probably not for you. But if you want to keep your eyes on the scenery — especially some scenery not accessible by road — enjoy!
I did!
(Postscript from the future:) The rest of the trip wound up being focused on the road and flights, so there will be no more travel stories from this New York trip. Looking forward to coming back some day!
