My cousin recently referred to the changing of the leaves as “garish fall colors.” I say bring on the garish!

My mom, Lisa, and I flew to New York City last Thursday and visited relatives upstate over the weekend. There were, indeed, garish fall colors to be found on the drive from the city to points north.

A two-lane road with a double yellow center line and a metal guardrail curves gently ahead through a forest in peak autumn color, with trees in orange, yellow, red, and green lining both sides. Beyond the trees a rocky hillside dotted with fall foliage rises against a clear blue sky.

A forested mountainside in autumn with rocky outcrops showing through trees in shades of green, yellow, orange, and red, set against a clear deep-blue sky, with a silhouetted pine branch framing the upper left corner.

A steep granite cliff face rises against a clear blue sky, flanked by tall pines and hardwood trees showing autumn colors of yellow, orange, and red. In the foreground along a roadside stands a yellow curve-warning sign with a 50 mph speed plate.

Deciduous trees with golden-yellow autumn foliage stand in front of a steep, forested mountainside with exposed gray rock cliffs and a mix of evergreens and other fall-colored trees.

A forested mountainside ablaze with autumn color in oranges, reds, yellows and greens, topped by exposed gray granite cliffs and evergreen trees along the ridgeline under an overcast pale sky.

A calm river winds through a dense evergreen and hardwood forest, with pockets of orange and yellow autumn foliage along the banks reflected in the dark water, under a bright blue sky scattered with puffy white clouds.
northeast of Lake Placid, New York
A rugged gray rock cliff rising above a mountainside covered in autumn foliage of orange, yellow, and green, with evergreens along the shoreline of a dark lake in the foreground under a cloudy sky.
