Sri Lanka and India Day 8: Alappuzha Backwaters Tour 24 February 2016

A traditional thatched-roof houseboat drifts along a calm green backwater channel lined with tall coconut palms and dense tropical foreground, with a covered dock and small dwellings on the left bank under a hazy midday sky.

This afternoon, we were invited on a tour of the Alappuzha Backwaters. This looks like a quiet and laid-back lifestyle along the waters. True or not, we enjoyed the glimpse of a culture where the water is a primary highway.

Sri Lanka and India Day 7: Olavipe Home Stay 23 February 2016

A traditional wooden canoe-style tour boat with a curved, decorated prow and an arched canopy floats on calm backwaters, fitted with two wooden folding chairs and an orange life ring, with a distant tree-lined shore on the horizon.

This morning we took a brief tour of a spice market in Kochi and then moved on to our home/farm stay in the Kaithappuzha Backwaters.

Sri Lanka and India Day 6: To India 22 February 2016

Cantilevered Chinese fishing nets silhouetted against a hazy pink sky at sunset, with the orange sun setting behind them over the water at Fort Kochi. Small boats and distant figures dot the calm sea on the right, and the sun’s reflection shimmers across the water.

We said goodbye to Sri Lanka this morning and flew across the Gulf of Mannar to Kochi, India. Our driver took us from the airport to our hotel by way of a short ferry ride, which was quite the experience as you will see shortly.
