My wife and I invited my mom to join us for a quiet weekend away to wrap up our summer holidays. We returned to the Sunshine Coast to revisit an area I had enjoyed last fall.

Our arrival to Gibsons was not at all sunny. Our ferry from Vancouver to Gibsons was met with winter-like blustery weather, but that made for some very fun cloudscapes.

A forested island with its ridge shrouded in low cloud rises across a calm gray sea beneath a heavily overcast sky, with a small boat leaving a wake near the far right shoreline.

The churning white wake of a ferry trails across dark grey-green water toward a forested, low-lying coastline with scattered houses, all under a heavy overcast sky with clouds draping the hills.

By the next day, things brightened up quite a bit.

A rocky pebble beach with weathered white driftwood logs in the foreground, smooth grey rock formations to the right, and calm ocean water leading to a forested island under a bright blue sky streaked with wispy cirrus clouds.
Sechelt, British Columbia, Canada
Sailboats and small vessels moored in a calm blue bay under a mostly clear sky, with forested hills and distant cloud-capped mountains across the water. A tall green tree frames the left edge of the frame.
Gibsons, British Columbia, Canada
A busy harbour marina in Gibsons, British Columbia, packed with sailboats and pleasure craft, with a long wooden pier, waterfront buildings, and a parking lot full of cars in the foreground. Forested hills and scattered houses line the shore under a clear blue sky.
Gibsons, British Columbia, Canada
A calm blue coastal inlet under a mostly clear sky, with a tall solitary conifer in the left foreground and forested hills and a mountain across the water. Puffy white clouds sit above distant mountains, and a small boat is visible on the water.

A small, densely forested island with rocky shores rises from calm blue water under a clear pale-blue sky, with a white cruise ship and a smaller boat passing in the distance to the left.

After a long weekend, it was time to head back … this time by a much sunnier ferry trip.

A BC Ferries vessel crosses shimmering blue coastal water past a small tree-covered island, with cloud-draped mountains rising in the hazy morning distance.
Langdale Ferry Terminal, Langdale, British Columbia, Canada
Forested hills and headlands rise from deep blue water along a coastal fjord, with layered mountain ranges receding into the distance under a bright blue sky dotted with white cumulus clouds.
